Decades of Safety Culture

“Over 20 years ago, while working for Rio Tinto Mine - where I spent 22 years of my career - I was asked to help install a new safety program that was called Behavior Based Safety. Keep in mind it was a program designed to make us safer. Cordero Rojo Mine won the Sentinels of Safety 2 years in a row 1997 and 1998. So that meant management wanted me to go tell the safest coal miners of all time that we had a way to make them even safer.  It was a pilot program and at first you can probably guess it went over like a ton of bricks. But the magic thing about it was that it was not mandatory. Employees could participate, or not, with no repercussions from management. Over time, the workforce started to buy in to the fact that they could indeed be safer than they were. Behavior based safety is exactly what it sounds like. It is a safety program to get you thinking about your own safe or unsafe behavior and the choices that you make. In all my experience coal mining, Behavior Based Safety is by far my biggest take away. Now days, what we try to get across to our employees is the fact that it’s all about the choices we make every day. Beyond the safety manual there is a group of individuals making safe and unsafe choices every day. Some are conscious at-risk behaviors and some are unconscious at-risk behaviors. It’s up to us to eliminate all at-risk behaviors. That’s what we practice here at Independent Oil and Gas.”

Our employees are required to:

  • Comply with all of Independent Industrials Health and Safety policies.

  • Comply with all federal, state, local and customer safety policies.

  • Read, understand sign off, and follow Independent Industrials safe work practices and job procedures.

  • Wear the appropriate personal protective equipment.

  • Report all safety incidents and near misses immediately.

  • Identify and immediately report any safety hazards, unsafe acts, or dangerous working conditions.

  • Not participate in unsafe activities for any reason.
